At first glance, we assume this was one of many "Theater Made" fighting knives deployed mostly in the Pacific theater of WWII. However, once we removed the scabbard it was clear that this fighting knife began life as a WWI Model 1918 Trench Knife, and then was modified for WWII use by removing the entire hilt and replacing it.
